“My interest in photography began some twenty years ago when I moved to Dallas, Texas, from my hometown, Corpus Christi. I had the opportunity to meet many Dallas area photographers through a short-lived career as a model. It was through those connections that I was able to get my foot in the door and offer my services to local studios, while learning the techniques and business of photography from the ground up. Since the photographic learning curve is very steep and long (and ever evolving due to the digital revolution), I have had to supplement my “on the job training” with whatever resources I could find. It was at this time I discovered a series of books by Ansel Adams, which become the spark igniting my passion for the art of black and white photography.
Since the age of ten, I have been traveling throughout Mexico. My travels to the interior started with family vacations, but revolved around surfing, as I got older. Beginning with those family vacations, and with the subsequent surfing adventures, I became increasingly aware and appreciative of the Mexican culture, landscape and history.
After officially, albeit metaphorically, trading my surfboard for a Sinar F1 4x5 view camera, I continued traveling Mexico in an attempt to capture the undefined and irresistible tug of adventure that the interior represents to me.
Of course, photography is a technically complex art form, therefore I should tell those who are interested in equipment and techniques that I use a Sinar 4x5 view camera system. While more expensive than other systems, the unchanging modular design allows older (and less expensive) components to work with the latest model camera or any other model in between. As for lenses, I will always opt for German glass; the one exception is my 500mm Nikkor convertible lens. I prefer Kodak T-Max 100 for its tighter grain pattern and process it with Gordon Hutchins PMK formula. I print on Kodak Polymax variable contrast paper. It is a consistent, double weight paper exhibiting a neutral to cold tone.
Currently I am Senior Photographer / Operations Manager for an international advertising services company. My job is to train and support the photography staff, oversee the equipment and studio facility in addition to fulfilling the photographic needs of our clients. There aren’t enough hours in the day! Having said that, I must add that it is a personally rewarding job, which enables me to perfect my skills and apply them to my art. I have concentrated my evolving knowledge and skills during the past ten years to place my black and white work at the level where I wished it to be. The results have been worth the effort. I have had several one man shows in the state of Texas with an overwhelming response.
The patient indulgence of my wife, Becky, and our two children, Kayla and Kyle, has only encouraged me to pursue my present course.”
